If training, working out or systematic exercise isn’t one of the top five things you look forward to in your daily life, odds are it will among the least sticky habits that you will struggle to make stick.

Why you look forward to it can vary from person to person. Vanity, community, coach, a pain-free existence, insecurities, body image, strength, longevity are some of the reasons I have heard. But odds are you need to wake up looking forward to it.

If it’s low down on your list, even the smallest distractions can derail your desire or motivation to show up and train, odds are you can’t make it stick in the long haul.

I know all of this sounds obvious. But I am not sure we think about enough as the reason why we cannot make the training habit sustainable or sticky enough.

We think gyms are boring, functional is fun, I might get hurt, I don’t want to look like a bodybuilder, I didn’t like that coach (gulp) etc as reasons we didn’t make it stick.

But let’s flip this equation. What do you need to make the habit stick? This might require you to try out things. Try out coaches. See if you like their cueing, body language and framework. Try out different gyms. Outdoor, unconventional or just plain bro. Try everything to find what’s your preference. Work towards different training outcomes.

Saying gyms or training are boring or unnatural is just lazy. You don’t say eating is not for me after a stomach bug, meh or bad meal. Extend the same luxury to your movement diet too.
